History
Sugat, a juxtaposition of the words “sugar” and “Kiryat Gat”, was established during the early days of the first wave of immigration to Israel. In an effort to solve employment issues in the country, a decision was made to establish a sugar refinery that would grow and distil beets. From the beginning of the 1950s, Sugat established itself as a leading company in Israel in the field of sugar, but a decision was made in 1983 to close the refinery due to the massive import of sugar and the sugar subsidy that was granted.
During the years Sugat developed and expanded – in terms of its demand to progress constantly in terms of new technologies, as well as in terms of diversifying its products. While maintaining its advantage in the sugar market, Sugat began importing top quality rice’s and legumes, selecting the highest quality varieties and choosing them in the most meticulous manner for Israeli consumers. Sugat’s product line is continuously expanding – rice, legumes, whole-wheat cereals, nuts, grains, seeds, baking products, couscous, pasta, flakes and more.
Sugar factory
In 2006, Sugat began constructing a sugar refinery, in which the company will manufacture 350,000 tons of white sugar annually by distilling raw sugar. The sugar is manufactured with some of the most advanced technologies in the world and will be of the highest quality, as required by international industries and the Israeli market. The sophisticated machinery will allow for a pause in the production on the Sabbath and on holidays, ensuring the production of sugar according to the most stringent kosher dietary laws. The new refinery will be planned according to the highest possible environmental standards, and will also include a sophisticated system for conserving water. The project will include the establishment of a power station within the factory, which will operate on natural gas, which is environmentally friendly and will meet all of the factory’s significant energy needs.
The company operates a number of advanced lines serving the industry:packaging lines for 1-ton, 50-kilogram and 25-kilogram bags, as well as a system for supplying sugar in bulk. The retail market receives the goods from the modern, sophisticated lines that package sugar in 1-kilogram bags. In addition, there is a system for packaging white sugar and special sugars (classic brown sugar, classic Demerara sugar and classic golden sugar) in jars.
As a dominant sugar authority in Israel, Sugat is also responsible for maintaining emergency stockpiles for the state.
